DESCRIPTION

Access Africana and The Visionary Leaders Institute have joined forces to present the inaugural Black History Month Education Conference and Sankofa Tour. Participants experience 4 and 5 Star accommodations, immersive tour components, and in-depth site-based educational and historical analysis. We are excited to announce special tour additions such as a rare visit to an omanhene's (King's) palace linked to the independence of Ghana where indigenous knowledge and cultural roots are explored. In addition to several museum visits and University lectures, we visit Assin Manso which is also called ‘The Last Bath.’ This is the convergence of two rivers where enslaved ancestors were given their last bath prior to being sold to Europeans at the coast. We then track their route to Elmina Slave Dungeon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is the oldest and largest slave dungeon in West Africa having been built in the 1400’s. We balance the experiential learning and profound depth of these tour components with market visits, Akwaaba Night and Farewell dinners as well access to beaches, swimming pools and nightlife.  Leaders in the education field will have ample opportunity to process key understandings and be able to workshop practical application of the themes, history, and relevance of their experiential learning.

DESCRIPTION

This phenomenal 9-day experience begins with in-depth historical tour of the capital city Addis Ababa, which is the third-highest elevated capital city in the world. We then take our first of three flights to Bahir Dar which literally means 'by the sea' as it is majestically located on lake Tana, near the origins of the Blue Nile. There, we take a day cruise exploring the millennia old Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries which are intentionally built on the islands of this massive and beautiful lake. Next, we journey onward via our private overland vehicle to Gondar where we are privileged to step back in time to one of the historic sites of the storied and mighty Ethiopian royal lineage, said to date back to Queen Sheba and King Solomon. In Gondar we walk the halls of 5 castles built by a succession of Ethiopian Kings, so historically important that they are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next we drive through the majestic Simien Mountains where we take rest at Simien Lodge, a 4-Star experience, complete with amazing spa offerings, which is the highest elevated hotel in the world. There, we enjoy magnificent vistas and local wildlife. On the way though, history and religion buffs will be excited to visit the former home of the Falasha, the Ethiopian Jews at the village of Wolleka. We then board our second flight to the famed Lalibela with more than 10 churches cut directly into solid rock and ornately designed, the most famous of which is Bet Giyorgis or St. George's. Before departing, we will enjoy a traditional coffee ceremony and then fly back to Addis Ababa. We close our trip with shopping experiences, a visit to sites important to the Rastafarian community, as well as the headquarters of the African Union. Our hosts will send us off in grand fashion with a culturally enriched special farewell dinner.
